SoddingYou would like an instant, lush, green lawn without the hassles of seeding and having to be concerned about washouts due to rains and irrigation or weeds that grow faster than the new grass. There is no better way to accomplish that than to lay a new yard with sod. The first step in the process is to eliminate any existing vegetation, especially if it is an area that has had perennial weeds and grass, especially Bermuda grass. Once this is accomplished, probably the most important thing that needs to take place is establishing the grade where the new sod will lay. I like to compare this to having a level floor before you lay carpet or tile. If it is not level before the new sod is laid, it will not be level once it is established. Grading is not only making sure the soil level is level but also corrects any drainage concerns. Now is the time to make sure that the water flows away from any building foundation and to make sure the water will flow off of the property as designed. Hand raking the entire area to remove any dirt clods, rocks or other debris is completed before the first piece of sod is laid to insure a level surface. When we are prepping an area prior to laying new sod, we “cut down along the edges”, which removes approximately one inch of soil, along all paved surfaces so when the new sod is placed, it is not placed above the adjoining areas. The extra time we spend prior to installation is well worth the investment once the project is completed. Sodding a new lawn not only compliments any landscape but adds value to your property.
