Retaining Walls & Steps

Many residences with walkout and view out basements are perfect settings for the construction of retaining walls and steps that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing that add interest to any landscape situation. During the design process, consideration is given to several key items. How is the area to be utilized? Is there a maintenance issue that makes the elevation change a difficult area to mow? Are there safety issues? Will constructing a retaining wall aid in correcting drainage problems? Does there need to be access from one level to the other? There are instances where constructing retaining walls and steps is absolutely necessary to correct problem areas; but this is not the only reason, retaining walls and steps will add interest, beauty and value to your property.

Steps can be incorporated into the retaining wall during design and construction, or simply be placed in a sloped area to allow access to the different levels. In some cases, steps may be the only way to access an area because the grade is too steep.

There are many products, both natural stone and concrete retaining wall systems, available for the construction of retaining walls and steps. It really comes down to personal preference. Natural stone, even boulders because of their natural form, tend to be utilized where a less formal “look” is desired. Natural stone is available in cut or chopped uniform pieces that are perfect for a more formal design. Although the concrete retaining wall system lends itself to a more “formal” setting, because of its uniformity, there are styles available that have a natural stone look.

As with any type of construction, the foundation is the most important part of the project. Excavation of the existing soil and a compacted, level gravel base is essential for the structural integrity of retaining walls and steps. The finished height of the wall will determine how the foundation is constructed.
